A bit of clarification... There are a few different ways of tagging things because we didn't always have auto-complete.
First the person/thing tagged must be in your contact list or they won't be found.
If you are using auto-complete, we'll replace the tag with something short and expand it later when the post is submitted. That will look something like
@bob+321
You can also tag by nickname/username or full name. But with full names we only look for 2 names, first and last, separated by one space. If you actually type out
@The Society For The Revival Of The Serial Comma
...we won't find it, as we're only looking for "First Last" with one space in between. But you can replace all the spaces with underscores and we will find it.
@The_Society_For_The_Revival_Of_The_Serial_Comma
(The reason why it wasn't found in this post is because I do not have that group/person in my contacts.)
If you've got two contacts with a name of "george smith", we will complete with the first one found. You can go into the "Repair Contact" section of the contact editor and add custom tags in this case - call one of them "george1" and the other "george2". Then if you type @george1 we'll get it right.
This probably sounds very complicated, but there are a number of options and tricks you can use to make hand-typed tags work. Using the auto-complete is obviously the best solution.
